All life forms, from microbes to human beings, contain genes. Genes are hereditary material carrying traits. During reproduction, these traits from parents are passed on to the progeny. However, not all members of the same species are completely similar. Having a large population and variety, reproduction may result in a new combination of genes in the progeny. If there is a small population of a species, then they need to be crossbreed or inbreed with survivor so that the successive generation have some different genes which make them unsusceptible to illness, weather change, etc. and help them survive.

Species Diversity-

Species are the group of individuals that are capable of interbreeding as well as producing offspring. Therefore, species diversity is the number of various species co-existing in the community, e.g., humans, bears, dogs, as well as birds.

Ecosystem Diversity-

Ecosystem diversity includes the number as well as the variability of the ecosystem within an area. The earth comprises ecosystem diversity such as oceans, deserts, forests, grasslands, and wetlands. Under the studies of ecosystem diversity comes the various regions of the ecosystem as well as their sustainability and their impact on the environment as well as human existence.


Therefore, these are the levels of biodiversity and their importance. The measurement of biodiversity is not calculated by the area in which species live, but the evenness of the species calculates it. The reason is when there is equality in species with each other, then the biodiversity remains stable, and there are no dominant species; however, if there are dominant species, then it will create an imbalance in the food chain and extinction. In the case of plants, dominant species will be invasive and take over space and nutrients from the soil, as well as hinder the growth of other plants.
