Woodstock NY festival is the most famous Music and Art Fair festival. It was held for the first time in 1969 on 15 August on the farmland of Bethel in New York. It was supposed to be held at Woodstock, but the town denied permission to stage it, so a farmer, Max, gave his land for the festival. And the festival retained its name as Woodstock because many singers used to live there. This festival was an innovation of the four creative minds- John Roberts, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and Michael Lang. It features amazing performances by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Santana, Joe Cocker, and Hendrix.

It came out to be a big hit, with about 40,000 people showing up for the festival. However, most of them took free entries. After doing the calculations, Lance (with the experience of a promoter ) and his team started working on fencing, entrance gates, and the ticket booths. But this didn’t work well because many people started coming to the concert two to three days early. Moreover, Lance and his team didn’t find any efficient way to set the booths fast. So, in the end, they decided to make this festival a free event.

Bad Weather At Woodstock NY Festival

The historic festival was scheduled for three days from 15 to 17 August, but the bad weather conditions delayed many performances. So, it lasted for four days up to 18 August. The Crowd faced many problems like lack of food and clean drinking water due to bad weather conditions. The surroundings became muddy, and the sanitation practices were inadequate.

Traffic Jam Delayed Performances At Woodstock NY Festival

Due to bad weather and muddy surroundings, Long traffic jams, many performances were put on for another day. The first performance was scheduled to be of Sweetwater. But the traffic jam got him and his instruments late. So Richie Haven became the opener with his two backup musicians and got the event started.

Woodstock NY Festival Area Today

The field and the stage are both preserved and are visited by many people of different generations till today.

In 1996, a cable tv pioneer, Allen Gerry, purchased the stage area and some of its surroundings and opened ” Bethel Woods Centre For Arts ” there. It was inaugurated on 1 July in 2006 with the performance of the New York Philharmonic. On the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Ny Festival, in 2009, an 8-hour concert was held by the alums at Bethel Woods Center. 


No one among those present at the Woodstock NY festival can ever forget those four-day events. It came out to be a big event in the history of music.
